Phyllis Chapman, 90, of Westborough, MA, formerly of Delray Beach, FL and Burlington, VT died on October 20, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of over 50 years to the late Colonel Robert B. Chapman (Retired Army) and is survived by her daughter Jennifer Critchlow and her husband John of Northborough, MA; a grandson, David Critchlow and his wife Maggie of Lancaster, MA; a granddaughter, Kelly Zajdel and her husband Matthew of Northborough, MA and two great grandsons, Angus Critchlow and Wyatt Zajdel.
Phyllis grew up in Maine. She was a graduate of Gould Academy in Bethel and obtained a degree in business administration from the University of Maine. Upon graduating, she worked in the human resource department of several hospitals. She wanted to travel so she became a recreation leader in the Special Activities Division of the Army. While stationed in Germany, she met her husband. Phyllis was a supportive wife to her husband’s Army career of 32 years. The family lived all over the United States as well as Germany. Phyllis enjoyed making social connections wherever she went. She corresponded at least yearly with her many lifelong friends.
Bob and Phyllis divided their time between Vermont and Florida after they retired. She enjoyed playing bridge, golf, the piano and swimming. She also loved gardening and was a member of several garden clubs. She loved classical music and it was always playing in the background. She moved to Willows of Westborough in 2014 to be closer to her family and grandchildren. In the last 6 months of her life, she especially enjoyed her two great grandsons.
She spent the last year of her life at The Oasis at Dodge Park where the staff cared for her in a loving, kind, dignified manner and appreciated her sense of humor and quick wit. For this, her family is grateful.
Phyllis will be interred beside Robert at the US Military Academy, West Point, NY. following a private family celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute the charity of their choice.
